The trail to Sherwin Lakes, less than a mile and a half from the town of Mammoth Lakes, is a relatively low altitude hike (begins at 7,900’) through a pine forest. We were pleased that this trail didn’t start climbing immediately like many of them do around here, but once it did most of the nearly 900’ of climbing took place on switchbacks over about a mile. Pretty tough! But we had some nice views of town and the mountains.
As we got closer to the lake we passed through a large area of burned forest from a 2008 fire.
First view of lower Sherwin Lake.
Some color change in the aspen on the other side.
Jim was fascinated with this burned tree. The bark was gone and it looked like a huge piece of driftwood.
Lovely spot to stop and eat our energy bars.
After all the uphill we were tired and didn’t try to find the second lake, which wasn’t visible from here. We ran into another couple who went looking for it but didn’t have any luck, so it was just as well we turned back. As it was we ended up hiking 4.9 miles, a good workout. The main trail does continue on another 2.5 miles to Valentine Lake, if you’re in the mood for a 10 mile hike. We’re going to miss these lake hikes when we leave this area.
Wonderful workout.
ReplyDeleteYou two just go from one gorgeous hike to another. Love those lakes.
The mountain lake hikes are gorgeous to begin with, but the touch of fall colors really amp up the beauty. Love that last photo:)
ReplyDeleteIsn't hiking along a stream or in the woods nice! Starting to look like fall.

ReplyDeletePretty to see that yellow reflected in the lake, I'm so eager for fall color this year to start!
