Million Dollar View

I was able to publish this and the last post from the post office parking lot in Big Sur. We’ll be in the dead zone for another four days.

We managed to snag this incredible spot off Nacimiento-Fergusson Rd. just south of Kirk Creek Campground. This paved narrow winding road climbs into Los Padres National Forest. Not far up are a few places to park, and overnight camping is allowed.

Never thought we’d find a free ocean view site along the coast.

The sound of the surf drowns out most of the highway noise.

We’re just a short walk from the Vicente Flats trailhead, so that’s where we hiked yesterday afternoon. It’s a five mile trail to some back country campsites but we made it 3.4 miles before turning around. It was uphill switchbacks most of the way but not real steep, and we had ocean views almost the entire time.

A great end to the day. This trumps not having an internet connection!

  2. Most definitely worth no internet and no hook ups! Who needs those modern things with a view like that! Awesome!!!

  3. Never would have imagined a boondocking spot like this on the CA coast. What a find!

  4. Being so near Esalen brought to mind a Youtube vid of Anna Halprin, age 93, doing a performance for their 50th anniversary fund-raiser. Here's the URL...

I recently discovered her work in: Creators on Creating: Awakening and Cultivating the Imaginative Mind by Frank Barron et al.

Thanks for the tip on Nacimiento-Fergusson. It looks like a gateway to weeks of adventure!

  5. I'd say, what a view! That highway is definitely carved right into the hillside! Thanks for the pics!

  6. We drove by below you last week. It looked like such a great spot to be but how on earth did you know to drive up there? The road looked pretty iffy.
