Park Sierra, Coarsegold, CA

We’re spending five nights at Park Sierra, another SKP park in Coarsegold, CA, about 25 miles north of Fresno on the way to the south entrance of Yosemite. Our Lazy Daze friend Lorna has had a lot here since 2010 and this was our first time visiting. It’s a really nice park, hilly and covered with oak trees. Coarsegold Creek runs through the property, with lots of interesting rocks.

The trailer behind us with the white latticework around the bottom is home to a family of stray cats so along with the many squirrels and birds, our two cats have been entertained watching all the excitement around us. Sophie escaped once and tried to join the cat family but she finally came home. They probably didn’t want her, either!

Very cute and bold acorn woodpeckers abound here.

A couple days of cold and rain kept us inside but we did get to visit with Lorna, took a drive to Oakhurst for a really good pizza and beer at Southgate Brewing Co, and spent an entire day in Fresno shopping. We went to Camping World for a vent cover, looked at some new RVs, found a really nice local sporting goods store, Herb Bauer, where I bought new hiking boots and Jim got a couple shirts, then to Costco for some new two-way radios to replace the ones we had that were no longer working properly. All that and stops at Trader Joe’s, Sprouts, and BevMo made for a long day.

We did manage to get in a nice hike on the Lewis Creek Trail near Oakhurst just south of the entrance to Yosemite. Beautiful waterfalls and a taste of what we have to come during our stay in Yosemite Valley coming up next.

Sadly I received a call from a former co-worker in Pensacola yesterday that our good friend Bonnie (who introduced Jim and me) died following open heart surgery earlier in the week. Jim was friends with her even before she and I worked together for 29 years. She has one son and I’m sure this is must be a very sad Mother’s Day for him. Getting older and losing family and friends can be a tough pill to swallow sometimes.

  3. Drool!! All those fabulous stores! You can understand why I feel this way being in Torrey with a week of rain. I love it here but the lack of shopping is really tough. And with all the bad weather we've had, we have no where to go!

Love your photos! Everything is so moist and green. Cute plants growing in the water:) That is a lot of water coming off that fall. I hope you stil have lots of water running when you get to Yosemite.

So sorry to hear of the passing of your friend.

    1. Hi Nancy, I saw on your blog we were at Mountain Valley RV park in Tehachapi on April 30, the same day you arrived, I think! That was a big group you were with.

  8. So sorry to hear of your friend's passing. I remember you telling us the story about how the two of you met. Glad you are enjoying Coarsegold. Did you see some of the artistry created in the trees by the acorn woodpeckers? I found their work to be very interesting. Happy to hear you found a brewery. We went to the one in Bishop. They have only 4 beers right now and the porter was ok but it seems you two have ruined us for just any old dark beer. :) Enjoy Yosemite!

  9. So sad to hear of your friend's passing. Special friends are just so precious. Haven't been to Coarsegold since early 90's, and it was gorgeous then. Can only imagine the lovely trees now. Must plan repeat visit.

    Virtual hugs,

    Judie

  10. How very sad for you to lose such an important friend and for her son to lose his mother right around mother's day.

Looks like a really lovely park to stay in. We have not joined Escapees but your posts on their parks just may change our minds. You've sure been busy during your stay there. Love your pictures of the hike. So envying you the upcoming visit to Yosemite. I have never been there and so want to go. Can't wait to see what you do. Poor Sophie, so picked on. She's such a cutie and smart enough to know a good thing when she's got it.

  12. Looks like a really nice park and love all the lush vegetation around the waterfall. I have a cousin in Oakhurst yet have only been there once briefly. Shame I still work summers when Yosemite would be on my list. Oh well, I'll suffer with Grand Canyon and enjoy your photos and stories.
