A Walk Among Giants

DSC04126

Just a couple miles west of Aguanga, CA and Jojoba Hills, on the north side of Hwy 79, sits a huge field of metal sculptures, home of Ricardo Breceda’s collection. Breceda is the artist whose famous sculptures dot the landscape around Borrego Springs. While it’s more impressive to see them scattered about the desert, seeing so many in one place is pretty amazing.

I’m posting way too many photos but they are all so unique I couldn’t decide which to leave out.

All of the above and more are for sale. Just call the phone number on a sign that says someone is only two miles away who will come and help. They would make for some pretty eye-catching lawn ornaments, don’t you think?

On Saturday we moved out of the boondock area at Jojoba Hills into a lovely site while the owners are away. Laurelee and her sweet dog Libby are here, too, and stopped by while taking a walk.

We’ll be here until Thursday enjoying the view, playing pickleball, hanging at the pool, visiting with friends, and taking one last hike in Anza Borrego. A very nice neighbor down the street supplied us with grapefruit and oranges from her trees, and even loaned us her golf cart to use for a couple days while she was gone.

We also went to Best Buy the other day and bought a new computer to replace the Surface we took back. Although we would have rather purchased one from Costco they did not have what we were looking for. We ended up getting this Lenovo Yoga, and although the Best Buy site now says it’s $569, when we bought it a few days ago it was only $499 in the store. So far we like it even better than the Surface so we’re hoping it holds up. We don’t have much faith in computers these days.

  4. Oh, wow, those are so cool! I could spend all day in there studying the detail.

Sweet site. The owners may have to evict you. ;-)

  5. Ricardo has been busy! Great pictures showing the detail of his work, would take the day to wonder thru his 'showcase'.

  6. I do so wish a large park somewhere would buy a couple truck loads of his pieces! I find them delightful and it is sad that they're just piled up on a lot in the middle of nowhere. Love the stomping dinosaurs :-) We do have to check our Jojoba Hills sometime, it looks like a very lovely place. And with very generous folks! Fingers crossed for the new tablet.

  7. He was in the process of moving when we were there last. I love his work, I was surprised that we didn't see a few pieces around Jojoba.

  8. I've seen many folks post about his sculptures in the desert but this is the first time I've seen any photos of this huge collection. I dropped my jaw so thanks for posting so many. How in the world did he do so many? They are fantastic! And so is that site you moved into. Did you ask for it or just luck out?

  12. I hadn't heard of this collection of sculptures. It's like a glimpse into a nightmare or Si Fi Movie ready for battle. Amazing! Each computer I get, I like less and less. I bought a laptop with 7 professional with free upgrade to windows 10. A window opens every day enviting me to upgrade to the 10 version. HA.... Everyone has sooooo much trouble with it I just keep hanging onto the 7 for dear life. I hope it goes well for you!!!

  15. Near the end of the photo gallery, I see some similarities between some of the sculptures' visages and a certain well-known candidate.

  17. Some of Ricardo's creations are quite bizarre. I often wonder who purchases such large pieces. It was so good to spend time with the two of you again. Missing you guys already! Safe travels!
