We Bagged Zanja Peak

DSC04667

Okay, so maybe it wasn’t Mr. Whitney, but after a three week hiking hiatus it felt like it to us. We did climb 2.7 miles with 1,000’ of elevation gain to Zanja Peak (elevation 3,533) from our campsite at Yucaipa Regional Park. Located in the Crafton Hills between Yucaipa and Mentone, CA, this is a pretty area with over 50 miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horses.

Almost there.

LA may be 70 miles to the west but it looks like the smog makes it this far east.

Happy to be heading back down.

Based on peakery data, Zanja ranks as the 3,620th highest mountain in California and the 33,692nd highest mountain in the United States. It’s doubtful this is on anybody’s bucket list, but if you’re staying at Yucaipa Regional Park it’s a very nice trail and a good workout. In fact we saw several joggers and one mountain biker on the trail.

Today we move on to Ridgecrest, where it looks like we’ll be doing battle with the wind.

  1. You would have never see all that green climbing Mr. Whitney. Beautiful trail.

  5. Love the pics. I bet the green seems weird after the desert.

  6. Glad to see you back out on the trail. We got our exercise last night dancing to Motown tunes. Thanks for the help again on that Jim.

  7. Pretty trail, and so great to see green in SoCal. Love the pic of the tall grass in the breeze. That smog makes its way to Banning - looks like a pretty clear day in Yucaipa though :-)

  10. What a lovely hike, and beautiful views! In all the hiking we've done, I've never heard the term "peakery data." (I thought you made it up :-))
