Okay, so maybe it wasn’t Mr. Whitney, but after a three week hiking hiatus it felt like it to us. We did climb 2.7 miles with 1,000’ of elevation gain to Zanja Peak (elevation 3,533) from our campsite at Yucaipa Regional Park. Located in the Crafton Hills between Yucaipa and Mentone, CA, this is a pretty area with over 50 miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horses.
Looking down on Yucaipa.
Views from the peak.
LA may be 70 miles to the west but it looks like the smog makes it this far east.
Happy to be heading back down.
Based on peakery data, Zanja ranks as the 3,620th highest mountain in California and the 33,692nd highest mountain in the United States. It’s doubtful this is on anybody’s bucket list, but if you’re staying at Yucaipa Regional Park it’s a very nice trail and a good workout. In fact we saw several joggers and one mountain biker on the trail.
Today we move on to Ridgecrest, where it looks like we’ll be doing battle with the wind.
